After an unsuccessful attempt to meet Susan at Central Park I decided to wander around the Upper West Side.
Touring a city without a strict itinerary is sometimes the best way to discover it. You come across sites and people you did not set out to find. Like The Dakota building on 72nd and Central Park Ave, a fine piece of real estate admired for its 19th century design, but probably more famous for being the site of John Lennon’s murder… *Strawberry fields forever…*
Leaving the memorial of the dead Beatle behind I headed west and discovered a Sunday flea market on 77th and Columbus. It was here that I stumbled upon Leah Rayblatt and her hand crocheted jewellery. A lovely lady who retired from her career as design director of a fabric company, Leah started crocheting eyeglass holders to sell and later moved into making necklaces. She makes them special by weaving in semi precious stones and unique vintage pieces. I was tempted to get one with a tiny silver kettle from China which opens up to contain four miniature dice. It would have set me back 125 bucks because the piece is from “the turn of the century”, according to Leah.
I neglected to ask which century. Sometimes we forget that it’s been 10 years into the 21st.
